New to horse riding? Whether you’re booking your first lesson or simply curious about what it’s like, this guide will help you prepare with confidence. Here are five essential tips to make your first ride at High Legh Riding Centre a great experience.
1. Dress the Part
Comfort and safety come first. Wear long, fitted trousers (like leggings or jodhpurs) and closed-toe shoes with a small heel. Avoid trainers or sandals. Helmets will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if it meets safety standards.
2. Get to Know Your Horse
Horses are sensitive animals. Approach them calmly and confidently, and always listen to instructions from your instructor when grooming or mounting. Making that early connection with your horse makes a big difference in your experience.
3. Focus on Your Posture
Good riding starts with good posture. Sit tall, keep your heels down, and relax your shoulders. Don’t worry if it feels awkward at first—your instructor will guide you through everything.
4. Communicate and Listen
Your instructor is there to help you learn and feel at ease. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. They’ll walk you through the basics step by step.
5. Enjoy the Ride
It’s normal to feel nervous, but remember to breathe and have fun. Horse riding is as much about the experience and bond with the horse as it is about technique.
